Firl Moon

Regular price £170.00

Firle Moon is part of my Under the Same Moon series and belongs to the Sussex Moons collection.

Returning to the South Downs during lockdown gave me something I hadn't experienced since childhood: time. Time to walk for hours without a destination, to notice the changing seasons, and to rediscover a landscape that had quietly become part of who I am.

We'd make breakfast, carry it up onto the hills and spend the day outdoors. The moon was often already there in the morning sky, quietly accompanying us throughout the day before becoming more and more present as dusk approached and we made our way home. Those long walks became a reminder that even during uncertain times, nature carried on at its own gentle pace.

Firle Beacon has always felt like a place where the sky takes centre stage. The open views across the South Downs constantly change with the weather and the light, making every walk feel slightly different from the last.

I've never been interested in painting the moon exactly as it appears. Instead, I wanted to paint the memory of those days—the colours that linger on your retina, the changing light across the chalk hills and the quiet pleasure of spending an entire day outdoors.

Edition of 60 hand signed original prints. Optional framing available in the UK only

The Story behind

A study of our beautiful South Downs — part of a series of three: Blue Moon, Pink Moon, and Gold Moon.
On long walks across the Downs, I have often felt the deep magic and ancient energy of the landscape — a place shaped by time and mystery. Chanctonbury Ring and Chanctonbury Dew Pond are steeped in history, once home to Roman temples, hill forts, and the source of countless magical stories.
I have always loved the trees — their silhouettes, their quiet presence — and the way they reflect in the still water. There is something powerful in the ring of trees, a timeless watchfulness.
These moons are a triptych, each capturing the ever-changing colours of my imagined skies — a reflection of shifting emotion and eternal wonder. Together, they form a ring of moons, a circle of power and beauty — or they may stand alone, each one meeting your gaze with her own silent story.
