Red is part of my collection of contemporary botanical portraits, inspired by the distinctive style of Vladimir Tretchikoff. I have long admired the theatrical lighting of his portraits, the intricate clothing details and, above all, the fearless, joyful clash of colour. There is also a subtle nod to vintage fashion illustration in the elegant simplicity of each composition.

Built through layers of hand painting, drawing, cyanotype and painted wooden surfaces, each artwork explores texture, pattern and light to create a richly tactile contemporary canvas. Botanical forms emerge through the surface, blurring the boundaries between portraiture and nature.

I've always loved the way characters in old films were often known simply by the colour of their hair — Red, Blondie or Blue.

The Story behind

My latest collection of characters draws inspiration from the distinctive style of Tretchikoff. I’ve always admired the way he used lighting in his portraits — the direction, the drama, the clothing details, and above all, the joyful clash of colour combinations. There’s also a subtle nod to fashion illustration in these works, reflected in the simplicity of the composition and the elegance of form.

Each piece is a layered exploration of texture: hand-painted elements, cyanotype processes, and painted surfaces on wood are combined to build a richly tactile finish. The characters are named simply after the colour of their hair — a quiet, playful gesture that leaves space for the viewer's imagination.

Shipping and payment

Each piece is made to order with a min 10 days production time, framing approx 10-14 days. Durning these times of changing tariffs and rules, prints are sent at owners risk of extra taxes outside the UK. Unframed prints come in a cardboard tube, special delivery signed for. Framed prints are sent via parcelforce. Postage costs are applied at the checkout.
